Luiz Ewerling - drums

Since the invasion of the Bossa Nova in the 1960’s, American music has been heavily influenced by Brazil. To experience some of the best contemporary Brazilian music, listen to the compositions of Luiz Antonio Ewerling.

Born in 1958 in southern Brazil, Luiz began his lifelong love affair with the drums at age six, and quickly became widely known as “O Mini Baterista,” or “The Mini Drummer.” His first television appearance occurred just two years later. The first steps in his promising career included a recording with the most famous children’s choir in Brazil, Os Pequenos Cantores do Colegio Anchieta (The Little Singers of Anchieta School), and an independently produced record with his partner, Gelson Oliveira. His reputation extended beyond Brazil as he continued performing and recording with various dance groups and collaborating with other Brazilian composers and musicians, such that in 1984 he was invited to play in the Chicago-based Brazilian jazz band, “Som Brasil.” This successful association led to numerous appearances in clubs and jazz festivals throughout the United States.

Luiz also shared his exceptional drumming skills by conducting clinics to teach Brazilian rhythms, with particular emphasis on the samba. In addition to playing with Som Brasil, Luiz expanded his musical vocabulary by freelancing with a large variety of jazz, blues, fusion, and Latin bands. He has performed and recorded with Som Brasil, Harry Hmura, Sugar Blue, Fareed Haque, Marshall Vente and Tropicale, Eldee Young, Ensemble Kalinda, Sergio Pires, Neville York, Elsa Soares (“The Queen of Samba”), and many other artists.

Luiz’s latest project is a synthesis of the musical worlds of Brazil and America. A COR DO BRASIL is a group formed by Luiz featuring his drumming talent and original compositions, including the soaring instrumental ballad, “Serene,” and “Brasil Sadio,” an electrifying blend of jazz, funk, samba, and partido alto. Some of Chicago’s finest session players are contributing to the production of this record.
